  It was a pleasure to work with Dan. He completed a major knob and tube rewire project for us that could not have gone more smoothly. I have worked with many contractors over the last several years and Dan was easily the most organized, responsive, and knowledgeable. He took extra care to make sure our home was clean at the end of every day and was flexible to work with our schedule to get the job done on-time and within our budget.

  We hired Thomas & Thum Electrical to do a simple fan and fan box install in the master bedroom and nursery. Dan came out and seemed very nice and knowledgeable - great first impression. Dan got as far as installing the fan, but when the switch was pulled out of the wall I was informed that the ground wire was hot and charged with 120V - huge problem and serious fire hazard. He halted work, cut all power to that circuit (about 1/3 of the house), didn’t finish the job and explained he needs to come back to run a diagnostic to find the source that is charging the ground wire. I was told that if the source could not be located during the diagnostic then the entire circuit would need to be replaced. That mean a complete rewire. I asked to have the circuit turned on and I was told he cannot due to the potential fire hazard and the liability involved since he was the last one to touch it - fine. I wasn’t happy, but couldn’t confirm or deny the problem since I’m not an electrician.

  Dan came back on a Sunday about 3 days later to run the diagnostic. Mind you the circuit remained turned off the entire time, which was an inconvenience that had us running extension cords everywhere throughout the house. It took Dan exactly 4 hours to run the diagnostic and of course the source charging the ground could not be found. So now we’re in roughly $100/hour for the diagnostic, charged for an incomplete fan installation and still no power to that circuit. He tells us that the circuit needs to be replaced and proceeds to tell us we need a brand new box since the existing is not adequate to service that circuit. But wait, there’s more! We’re told our service is old and needs to be replaced. Plus our grounding is inadequate. All said and done we are looking at about 10k in electrical repairs (6K for the circuit and 4K for the service replacement). Not to mention the dry wall repairs after the demo required for the rewiring. Safe to say a second opinion was in order. He leaves with the circuit still powered off.

  After some research, we hire a second licensed electrician to come by and evaluate the circuit and switch where the hot ground was detected. I informed the second electrician of the situation and explained what Dan had told me. They give Dan the benefit of the doubt, trace through the circuit and run a diagnostic on the switch. They’re everywhere in the house including the attic - it takes them 4 hours. Turns out nothing was detected and we’re told the switch was left a mess. Almost like the problem was created during the installation. The second electrician reconfigured the switch, completed the fan install and turned the power back on - no problem. They did a great job. We were also told that our service and ground were completely fine and did not need to be replaced. We also learned that some outlets, lights and switches that were originally turned off were not even part of the circuit Dan turned off.

  In conclusion there was no issue and I was feeling taken advantage of. The whole experience was not cheap and ended up costing a lot of unnecessary money for a simple fan installation. I expressed my concerns to Dan and he was responsive and refunded $150 so there’s that.

  I wouldn’t hire Thomas and Thum Electrical Contracting unless you have deep pockets and want unnecessary electrical work done to your residence or place of business.
