    House siding and painting
    $30,000

It goes without saying that we are very unhappy with Garrett Kellogg / Trophy Roofing.

Garrett’s bid was not the cheapest we received – it landed near the middle. But we chose him based on the numerous things he sold us on: 1. An English speaking crew. 2. He would be out himself EVERYDAY to walk the job and allow us to note any issues we saw so they could be corrected the next day. 3. He was Better Business Rated. 4. He had good reviews. 5. He had branched out into siding 2 years prior and had experienced crews.
THE JOB: Siding and painting our home. Upon walking our home we pointed out places where the 35-year-old wood siding/trim had water damage and he stated that any he found would be replaced before siding the home. All window, fascia, and corner trim were to be replaced with new. Once completed – the entire house and deck were to be cleaned, caulked, primed, and painted.

PAYMENT AGREEMENT: We told him the numerous experiences we had over the years of contractors not finishing jobs and/or taking money they didn’t earn and that we were not comfortable paying money upfront and to not bid if he wasn’t okay with that. He bid. Then later he said he really needed materials to be paid upfront. We ended up agreeing if he provided receipts. However, everything else (all labor) was to be paid upon completion. (This was stated in several emails as well as verbally. Even the bottom of the contract we signed states “PAYMENT TERMS You may pay us as you are paid by your insurance company, and or, as your mortgage company releases your funds, and, or,on a PER JOB COMPLETED BASIS.”) He did not honor this.

He dropped materials. We cut him a check. His crew (Pete) started – and they were fantastic. Then a week passed, and he asked for more money. We pointed out that this wasn’t the agreement and had a big argument about it with him stating that it absolutely was and that he never agreed to anything else.

My husband – to keep the peace - then agreed to a weekly draw to cover labor so those guys would be paid – because according to Garrett he couldn’t cover it. Then the next week Pete’s crew didn’t come back - we were told “family emergency” and were willing to wait for him to resolve it. Garrett said no. Days passed without any communication. Then he showed up with a crew of guys and asked for more money – even though no one had been there to work since the last draw for labor. >>> Garrett then told my husband that if we didn’t pay the money he was taking his guys and walking. (the exact definition of EXTORTION.) <<<

We were pretty upset by this point and felt trapped. Less than 50% of the siding was complete; less than 80% of the entire job – yet he now had 90% of the money.

This crew spoke little to no English. Many days we had to try to communicate via Google Translate. We witnessed the worst craftsmanship we’d ever seen. They burned through materials because things had to be redone – and we had to make concessions. Garret was no longer answering our calls or responding to texts. We hadn’t seen him in well over a week. The siding portion was supposedly completed and the crew left. Garrett had refused to finish the remaining items because according to him he wasn’t making any money off of us.

This was a big project that four other companies said they could do for the same price OR LESS. So there is no excuse for what we have experienced. Now – no one will finish this job for what we still have in the budget – and much of what Garrett’s crew did we are consistently being told is bad and needs to be redone.

Unethical. Dishonest. Lacking Integrity. Those words pretty much sum up our experience with Garret Kellogg and Trophy Roofing. Do we have legal recourse? We honestly don’t know – but do intend to find out.
