Schwartz, Luke Clifford
Owner
My husband and I hired Turning Leaf Fine Homes in 2017 to build our dream home in Benzie County. We were originally charmed by Luke Schwartz’s surface personality and sales pitch. Ultimately though, we discovered that Turning Leaf and Luke are unable to take accountability, have awful communication, went significantly over budget, took many months longer than promised and delivered a faulty construction project — which they would not repair.
The planning and early stages of construction went as expected. But before long, the communication would stop for days on end and no one would show up for long periods of time. The amount of time we spent trying to manage and connect with Luke throughout the process was comparable to a full-time job. After enormous urging and stress on our part, our home was eventually completed — a very long eight months later than the date initially promised and more than 25% over the original quote.
Once we were finally settled in, we assumed the hard part was over. However, during our first winter (2018-19) in the house, we discovered a significant roof leak. Instead of fixing the issue, which had been caused by his crew's faulty construction, Luke simply painted the ceiling and repaired nothing. Next winter — of course, the roof leaked again. And Luke would not return our calls. We gave in and hired (at our own additional expense) another roofing company to make some surface repairs, which did remedy the issue for a few years.
However, because the roof's construction was faulty at its core, eventually the temporary repair also failed and caused our ceiling's drywall to bulge. When we were able to track him down, Luke did come to inspect the issue and was quick to blame a variety of other issues for the problem and made multiple empty promises that never materialized.
Eventually, we came to terms with the reality that Luke and Turning Leaf were not going to take accountability for the problem that they caused with their faulty construction. The situation was becoming dire, so we chose to bite the bullet and hire a (reputable!) roofing company and pay a significant amount of money for a completely new roof — less than 6 years after we moved into our brand new home. Absolutely unacceptable.
We understand some aspects of construction can be unpredictable. But these lapses in communication, no-shows, and lack of regard for the budget were far beyond what any normal project should endure — not to mention the lack of accountability and the poor roof construction.
