Troy Van Maaren
My experience with Van Goodman Construction was terrible and I would give this company a minus 5 if I could. Troy Van Maaren, owner of Van Goodman Construction, never showed up on the job site after the excavation of the basement. Troy never supervised his crew (his sons). There were, and still are to this date, numerous problems with the framing, improper setting of a beam, siding that has to be removed and replaced, siding that needs to be finished, decking that had to be removed and is being replaced, and the list goes on. After 124 days on the project of building a shell of a 400 sf addition and doing demo on a kitchen, the project is still a shell (and the shell is not finished ready for interior work). Before inside work can be done, the exterior needs to be completed. We have been displaced from our home for over 3 months. Douglas Clark, who I thought was part of Van Goodman Construction, was on site at least 3 days a week and he pointed out a lot of the problems with the work Troy's sons were doing. Until 120 days into the project, I did not know that Douglas Clark was not part of Van Goodman Construction (even though he has a @.vangoodmanconstruction email address). It was my understanding that Douglas was the only "authority" on the project and he pointed out all of the problems with Troy's sons' work. Unfortunately, Troy's sons did not listen to Douglas Clark. Overall, this was the worst quality job I've seen and many areas have to be redone. One of the biggest issues is the floor of the addition is lower than the existing house where the addition is attached to and flooring will be very difficult to install because of the different levels. Many people who do not have experience with construction, especially framing that will cause issues in the future, will never understand how bad this job was. I have over 20 years of experience with commercial construction and have overseen over 600,000 sf of new builds and remodels. I wish I could submit pictures with this review. In addition to the poor quality of work, they did not follow the architect's plans. I spent a lot of money on an architect to avoid problems.
