    Vinyl Flooring project

    Our refrigerator water line broke and damaged the laminate floor, so we had to replace ALL the flooring.. I interviewed several contractors for the job and really liked Mauricio. I was impressed that he, the owner, came out to give me a quote. He was easy to talk to, he listened to me, and he assured me he could get the job done for the amount the insurance was giving us. He even said he could replace our undermount kitchen sink, which all other contractors claimed couldn't be done. He brought me samples of vinyl flooring to choose from. He claimed he doesn't mark up materials, so I arranged to pay for the flooring directly from Home Depot. He was nice enough to meet me there and take care of everything. Mauricio and his son got to work on the sink as his crew started removing the old flooring. They worked late into the evening and over the weekend to finish as quickly as possible. The installers were respectful and very nice. Unfortunately, Var-Con is not very professional when it comes to giving a detailed quote or a detailed contract. And I didn't know enough to insist on every detail being in the contract. Halfway through the flooring project they realized they had to cut the old flooring from around a desk, cabinets and the toilet. I had expected Mauricio would have known to check for that when he gave me the quote, especially the toilet. He insisted we needed to pay extra for that. As they finished up the project we started to notice they didn't take enough care on the details like the trim around the walls, at the doors and between the vinyl and carpet. Glue was seeping out of seems and pieces of the trim were loose. They also did some drywall repair that was not done well at all. The attempt at texturing failed. I guess Mauricio figured since it was behind the refrigerator it didn't matter. When we went to pay the final payment he didn't have a final invoice ready for me. We had to work out the total together. We had to haggle over the charges for materials. I had paid for the flooring which was the majority of the cost, but that left $1400 for incidentals which I thought was excessive considering he claimed he doesn't add profit into materials cost. After us both calculating the final cost and getting different amounts we settled on what we thought was right. The next day my husband realized we overpaid by $800. I let Mauricio know that I expected a refund, which he absolutely did give, but he tried to add another bill for a couple of other materials he had to buy. All in all, Var-Con is just not professional enough. I'm so disappointed, I was really hoping to have found a contractor that I could use for future projects.
