In the past 14 days, we have filtered through almost 400,000 building permits from around the country. After spending hours looking into what construction is going on we have picked 6 projects that we think deserve a little extra attention. This week’s projects came from alerts we have created for solar projects, data centers, tech company construction, and new restaurants.
Amazon Bookstore
Amazon is opening its second Bookstore in New York. The store will be located on the first floor of their New York Headquarters and across the street from the Empire State Building in Vornado’s building on 7 West 34th Street. The first permit to mention the bookstore was issued on March 21st and since then four building permits have been issued for the project. The total cost of construction is estimated at just over $1 million.

Cuyama Solar Project

On April 4th, a building permit was submitted to Cuyama’s building department for a new solar project and is currently under review. The permit-estimated $6.5 million project is for the construction of a 100-megawatt photovoltaic system. The address stated in the permit is 596 Kirschenmann Rd in Cuyama County outside of Santa Barbara, CA.

Google Data Center

Over the past month, Google has submitted building permits for a new data center in The Dalles Oregon. Google’s first data center in the country was in The Dalles and now they are looking to expand their presence. Google filed permits at the location under the name Design Inc rather than under their own name. The address for the project is 4340 River Trail Way and the construction of the project is estimated to cost approximately $9 million.

Google Office Austin

We already knew that Google was moving into the Green Water Treatment Plant redevelopment at 500 W. Second St in Austin. However, yesterday, Google filed a building permit for a project named Google Gate 2. The permit is for tenant improvements and revealed that google will occupy the 23rd and 24th floor of the building. The permits indicate Google plans to spend $9.3 million renovating the space to make it uniquely theirs.

Hotel Magdalena

Austin hotelier Liz Lambert’s Hotel Magdalena moves forward with construction. The new Lake | Flato designed hotel will be located on 110 Academy Drive just off south congress. The five-story building will be made up of 4 buildings for a total of 113,687 square feet. The plans for the $27 million project were issued by Austin’s Building Department on April 11th and individual building permits for the project are currently pending. Hotel Magdalena will be Liz Lambert’s 5th hotel and her 3rd on South Congress.

New Randy’s Donuts

Building permits indicate that the famous donut shop is opening a second location. The Inglewood-based shop is known for its iconic sign as seen above. The second Randy’s location will be in the Westfield Century City mall on West Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles. permits don’t indicate much about the work so the question remains, what will the sign look like?
