My husband and I contracted Todd Altizer of Altizer Contruction, LLC in Christiansburg, VA to do some remodeling at our home in Virginia. I should have known things would not go well when he put us off for several months before he even came to our house to discuss the repair work. We contacted him in May 2013; he came to see our house in July 2013; we finally got a quote in writing in September 2013; and then he failed to even begin the work on our house until March 2014. I have e-mail after e-mail from him apologizing to us for the delay. I only wish that I had added a clause to our contract that would have let us out of our contract with him if the repairs were not complete by a specified date. If I had known that he would put us off for 10 months, I never would have entered into a binding contract with him. Once he started the work in March 2014 it took him 3 months to complete what work he did do. But when he came to our house in July 2013, he gave us every indication that he would have all of our repairs complete before the end of 2013!
We had asked Todd Altizer to remodel two bathrooms. The bulk of the work consisted of replacing the fiberglass showers in both bathrooms with simple tub kits. His contract said that plumbing would be charged separately. I was shocked to learn that we would be charged an additional $1,900 for the plumbing for one bathtub. I should add that the only work to be done in the first bathroom was to replace the existing fiberglass tub with a new tub kit (and to repair the drywall as needed). And to replace the old linoleum floor with new linoleum. That was it. The sub-floor was fine, no additional flooring work needed to be done.
Prior to completing the first bathroom, Mr. Altizer did several other odd jobs for us around our house. He had replaced some baseboards in our dining room. The first color that he chose was a horrible match. I requested that the baseboards that he had installed be removed and replaced with a better match. If he had shown me the color choices prior to installing the baseboards, the situation could have been avoided. This was the first of several instances where Mr. Altizer chose not to communicate with us.
Mr. Altizer replaced a bedroom door for us, which was a special order. When I saw that two doors were delivered, I asked why and he said that he thought I wanted the bathroom door replaced as well. That had never been discussed and was not on the contract that we had signed.
I think that his additional $1,900 charge mentioned earlier was padded with the charges he incurred for his own mistakes: the wrong colored baseboards and the unneeded special order door. When I asked Mr. Altizer to provide us with a breakdown of the $1,900 for plumbing he failed to do so. He seemed offended that we would ask for a breakdown of any of his charges to us.
Other issues included damage to an armoire and muddy footprints on our white carpet. One day I came home to find a roll of linoleum laying across my couch in our living room!
Mr. Altizer convinced me that he was capable of replacing two of our exterior doors. During two different occasions, we had discussed with Mr. Altizer that we wanted the new front door to have a storm door, just like the existing front door. Mr. Altizer ordered a front door that came without the storm door. Not only did it not have a storm door, but the facings did not allow a storm door to be installed on the front door without considerable additional work. Mr. Altizer never offered to replace the front door with the door that we had wanted.
The second door that Mr. Altizer replaced was installed horribly. Large gapping holes were visible all around the door facing. When we discussed this issue with him, he acted like he knew about it but was in no hurry to fix the problem. From the time that he installed the second door, to the correction of the trim, was approximately two months.
The final blow came when we decided to not let Mr. Altizer remodel the second bathroom. Based upon Mr. Altizer’s original quote, I computed an amount over and above what I thought was reasonable for the work that he had completed to date and I paid Mr. Altizer in full. Mr. Altizer threatened to take us to court for an additional $578. Once again he never offered a breakdown of what the additional charge of $578 was for. I have been using contractors for 24 years, and I have NEVER been threatened by a contractor before. As a matter of fact, I have never had any major issues with any contractors that I have ever used until now. And no contractor has ever been so inattentive or taken so long to complete their work as Mr. Altizer. To say that I have been disappointed by Mr. Altizer, his lack of professionalism, and his threat tactics, is an understatement. And my husband and I are out an additional $2,478 over and above Mr. Altizer’s original contract for unexplained work.
