    Basement remodel

My wife and I extremely disappointed with Paul and Melissa Lewis. This project started in June and is now maybe halfway completed with no end in sight. According to other contractors the job should have been done in three weeks top, now going on three months.
We had to fire this contractor for a number of reasons. The work was extremely sub-par and after verifying with a reputable high-rated licensed plumbing company(RossCo Service Plumbers), they determined the installation was not installed up to code, after having to come out and stop a leak that Paul's team had left behind. Not sure how much damage that would have caused if I had not been documenting the work.
After having two additional contractors out to document a non-competitive review of the current work, it was their opinion the work was sub-standard and told me they could not believe what they were looking at.
We had an intuitive feeling that things were not right after a number of issues. First, Paul's crew is made up of two people in which are husband and wife. We overheard a conversation that the wife had never sanded and stained a staircase, yet Paul directed her to continue. Not only were there obvious circular marks left on each stair, they continued to stain it anyway. Paul also told my wife he was not staining the staircase, although it is clearly stated in the signed contract as part of the job. The stained staircase is incredibly darker than our floors, you would think they would have tested an area to match the floors. They completely missed the most obvious area of the staircase and left the old orange finish in place. That left me baffled!
Their communication was horrible, we had no idea when they would show or leave. They left floor shaving all over our driveway and yard from where they would measure and cut. The floor has places where I'm wondering how they were planning on fixing it. They did not cover our vents and did a horrible job at taping up the plastic because, there is now a layer of dust covering our entire upstairs and in our ventilation. We have two small children and a third baby on the way. So now we are left with figuring out how to clean all that up. They used our towels to clean something up and draped the dirty towels across our hangars where we dry our clean clothes. The husband changed his oil in our driveway and used a large pot we had sitting in our yard to drain the oil and left the pot and the empty oil containers on our property. I can't make this stuff up!!
Paul's bids are not itemized, so there is no way to know where the costs are coming from or how he priced the job out. Our insurance asked Paul to itemize his expenses and he has not, he even went as far as to lie and tell the insurance that they had the wrong contract after being questioned about overlapping expenses in which he could not explain or did not want to explain. He still has not furbished the "correct" contract. You would think a contractor who would like to finish being paid would do so.
After these findings and the reviews of licensed professionals, how can I possibly let Paul come back and fix what he is obviously not capable of doing or knowing how to do in the first place. It was obvious that he was going to move forward with whatever he could get away, and that violates my moral and ethical standards. I will not tolerate being taken advantage of or being lied to!!
I also think it's strange that the company owner is registered under their 19 yr old son's name. Why put your son at risk of financial or legal litigation?
I have documented every step of this process with pictures, videos, emails, and professional opinions. I advise everyone to ask for their references and verify their work!!
We are displaced in our house, entire basement now upstairs and sitting outside under a tarp. We have to homeschool our children in complete clutter.
