    Sunroom remodel
    $9,000

Polite, punctual, attention to detail, showed when he said he would, notified us of delays and why- and if the job ran long for the day- why it did. End result looked great.

Remodel the Interior of Our House
    $43,000

We hired Belmar to correct problems from a previous contractor. We emphasized attention to detail from day one and the need to get it right this time. Their estimate took 3 months and was higher than others. Based on a recommendation, we chose to wait and pay more to avoid another nightmare. Unfortunately, a nightmare is what we got. They walked away 6 weeks into a “4-5 week job” less than halfway finished.

Belmar promised to seal doorways and cover our floors and belongings to minimize dust, but they arrived unprepared, forcing us to provide our own coverings.

Jason said they would start slow but speed up. They never did. We went days without workers on site. The tiler said he would be back the next day but didn’t return for more than a week. Many times, they texted just a few minutes before they arrived. Unpredictable!

Belmar missed many details. They chipped multiple tiles while building steps. We texted about this the same day, and Jason replied, “OK we will take a look at it on Tuesday.” On Tuesday, they saw the chips but never replaced them. Now, they accuse us of chipping those tiles.

The contract included a $150 fee to remove and replace single tiles, which we agreed would address a clicking tile in the kitchen. They later applied it everywhere. Jason claims they removed 15 tiles but couldn’t say which ones. They left trip hazards of exposed mortar for two weeks and never removed the old grout. We cleaned and removed most tiles ourselves—including the ones they chipped—and the tiler specifically asked me to continue when he returned.

The clicking tile required replacing some backer board. When they cut it out, we expected them to adjust the saw to the backer board’s depth, but John cut nearly an inch into old hardwood floors beneath. I said, “What happened here? It looks like you cut too deep.” He replied sarcastically, “I either cut it, or I don’t. Do you think this is going to sink?” They say the cut won’t be a problem. We hope they’re right, but we want a guarantee in writing.

Their footprint for the master bedroom step left an unsightly, notched tile exposed. They mis-measured and built it too tall, blocking a vent cover and making the steps uneven. When we asked for fixes, they became upset, accusing us of changing the design. Imagine if we had done as they asked and waited until after the tile was installed to speak up.

We asked them to set aside chipped tiles because we bought extra. They still installed many chipped edges and corners, claiming grout would fix it. We caught what we could but let others go because there were so many. They’re still visible, even with grout. The Schluter was poorly installed, tilted, and in segments, though we bought extra-long pieces.

Belmar framed a pocket door, but the surrounding plaster was falling into the track. Continued use would make it worse, so we bought supplies and spent an evening creating a barrier. The next morning, John told us this was a good idea. Why didn’t they do it during installation?

They billed us for materials but failed to provide a detailed list or receipts.

Jason claims that an electrical subcontractor billed them $350/hour per worker for partially-completed work in our home. Another electrician told us that some lights they installed are a safety hazard and should be left off until they can be fixed.

Finally, when Jason came to tell us they were leaving, he said again he’s detail-oriented. Our tile has a limited number of unique pieces, so we asked the installers to mix them up. He happened to be standing on top of an identical pair. When I pointed them out, he insisted they were different. I’ve included a picture of the two tiles so you can see how “detail-oriented” he is.

We have never denied that we have high standards, but we paid for quality. We mention problems early because they’re easier to fix in process than at the end. They call this “changing the plan” and “unrealistic expectations.” We can only describe Belmar as unprofessional, lacking attention to detail, inconsistent, untrustworthy, and unwilling to admit mistakes.
