Our experience with Bob Porter was not a positive one and it turned out to be an extremely uncomfortable and stressful situation for us. We hired Universal Windows Direct to do Board and Batten siding, and they sub-contracted the job out to Bob. It was apparent from the very beginning that he did not have any experience in this type of siding or decent craftsmanship. Early on, he asked me what size Battens I wanted, and I showed him a picture. He ended up doing them too thick, and too far apart. After the first day and the siding was not what we wanted, my husband brought it up to him and Bob got very defensive, and they got into a yelling match in our front yard. We were able to get that resolved, and we left Bob and his helper to their job. As things got farther along, we started noticing severe problems with most of the job. This was not a cheap investment, and we were not going to allow sub-par craftsmanship, which is exactly what Bob was trying to give us. Nothing was measured properly. Any circular holes were cut at 90-degree angles, and then filled in with caulk and painted, including covering our brand new windows in caulk. We brought the issues to Universal Windows, and they sent him back to fix things. He came back but instead of fixing gaps and doing things properly he caulked everything and then argued that we have “too high of standards” and that my husband, who does carpentry and drywall, “lived in a different world than him”. The worst part is that we had an electrician come on day one, to rewire and put boxes in for the exterior lights and Bob covered them and then covered them again with a piece of wood for the lights to sit on that was not even level, then he tried to put it on the electrician.
I highly suggest doing your research before hiring Bob and be aware that he is not BBB accredited. Something that I really wish Universal Windows had notified me of, prior to him starting on our job. It also would have been nice to know that Bob was sub-contracted and not actually apart of Universal Windows, but ultimately, I am grateful that I did not hire Bob directly because Universal Windows is now working on salvaging the disaster that Bob left.
