Miguel Angel Coronel
Sole Owner
I hired Miguel for a complete renovation. Initially easy to work with and flexible with FHA 203K rehab contract.
Demolition skills: Great
Miquel was quick to demo the project and haul away any debris that needed to be hauled away.
Rough carpentry: Good
Rebuilt area under tub that was completely rotted out in a timely manner. Didn't pay attention to making sure there were nailers for my kitchen cabinets. Although he was not installing the cabinets, a good rough carpenter should have the foresight to make sure there are nailers for cabinets. I had to cut out a significant amount of drywall in the kitchen to add nailers
Plumbing : N/A
I hired my own plumber
Electrical: Great
His electrical subcontractor did a great job at an affordable price
Flooring and tile subcontractor: Good
Did a nice job on tile in bathroom although only centered floor tile front to back and not left to right. I had to remind Miquel to go back and calk the base of the tub. Wood flooring turned out nice although I question doing trim prior to flooring. Casing was cut to accommodate flooring but has noticeable gaps between casing and flooring in some areas.
Finish carpentry: Poor
Lets just say if it wasn't for his painter with caulk and filler his work left alot to be desired. Miquel and his crew are not finish carpenters by any means.
Drywall: Poor
Miguel told me his drywall "crew" was busy on another job so he did most of it himself. Sent his paint crew to texture before any of the corners were touched with tape and mud. I was advised he would do "orange peel" and it turned out to be about 50% knock down and the rest just splattered texture. Considerable defects in great room where only one coat of mud was put on ceiling. Tried to fix it before paint, but made it look worse. I considered living with it but after two weeks asked him to redo it. Miguel sent his "union drywallers" who turned out to be a bunch of kids that redid the entire ceiling including paint, but didnt retexture it evenly. They tried to match texture which is impossible. They feathered the drywall lines out nicely but didn't match the texture so it looked worse, in a different way. They also got alot of overspray on my kitchen cabinets, took me a few hours to clean. They lost my hide a key. Lived with it for about 2 weeks then told him it was unacceptable. I requested $750-$1000 credit so I could have it fixed by another contractor. Miguel offered me $500 credit and wanted me to sign a waiver that I was accepting all work as is, and that he was graciously giving me a $500 credit even after accepting I accepted the drywall work twice. I told him to keep his money and called him a tool, which is what he is. I am subsequently covering the crappy looking ceiling and walls with shiplap.
Overall I would really think twice before hiring Carbon Construction, especially if you have alot of finish carpentry and drywall work. Demolition? He's your guy. I should have done my due diligence and gotten more quotes but Miquel seemed liken a really good guy when I hired him, but as the project progressed I felt he was just in "California Style Fix and Flip Mode" and wanted to get done as fast as possible even if it meant cutting corners. I myself, being from the Midwest, feel contractors there take a little more pride in their work, but I blame myself for not vetting him better. Live and learn.
