The principals for this company, Gannon and Scott, came highly rated by a knowledgeable and respected colleague of my wife. That's why we were so shocked and dismayed by the shoddy work and horrific treatment we received.
We contracted with Handverker to construct a small 10'x6' pantry addition to our home for around $24,000. We were told it would take approx. 6 weeks. We had done our due diligence, getting other estimates, and referrals. So we felt confident moving forward. However before the ink was dry troubles started. This project required some excavation and to do this was sent a man who looked to be a recent escapee from a concentration camp. He was 2 days older than dirt and his weight was in negative numbers. He and his normal sized helper pile all the debris on my front lawn were it would lay for 6 months. They worked on average 2-4 hours a day on the days they'd show up and the smoked about 4-5 packs of cigarettes a day ...each. I took my concerns to Gannon who seemed to care little about us, or our project. He acted as though he had bigger fish to fry. That, I found out latter was the crux of the problem. As was relayed from a parade of sub-contractors, helpers, strangers and friends, who would occasionally show up for work; "Gannon and Scott always take on too much work." "Yeah, they spread themselves too thin, and someones going to suffer. I guess it's you. Ha. Ha."
Ha. Ha. indeed. As bad as it is knowing you and your project are an afterthought it was worse trying to get Gannon to recognize the problem and try to take some steps to correct it. As This 6 week project turn into 6 months, (no joke, they started when we were setting off 4th of July fireworks and they were still there while we put up our Christmas lights). every time I spoke to Gannon I had to plead him to come to the job and see for himself the garbage strewn about, the out plum and square walls, the bulging bulkheads, the floor with a half inch dip in it, the door and cabinet doors that wouldn't close etc. etc. And he could not have cared less. I felt as though he was giving me a giant middle-finger while taking my money.
After 5 months of pleading Gannon finally showed up and saw that what I had explained to him was factual and not exaggerated, if anything it was understated. To his credit he fired "Father Time" and his helper and promised that he himself would be there everyday and make things right. That lasted 2 days. Then he was AWOL again. Eventually, after numerous corrections the job was finished and looks OK. We've called to ask them to return to fix some problems they have made appointment to do so and have not. I doubt I'll ever see Gannon or Scott again.
Two illustrative points.
They left a wheelbarrow filled with mud, construction debris, lunch papers and food scraps, and rainwater on my patio for over 3 months. Were it had rotted and attracted vermin. (I already mention the dirt pile on my front lawn).
I had asked them for over 2 months to secure the gate in the construction area they did not and my dog got out and was hit by a car.
OK 3 points. Almost daily our neighbors would stop by and offer their condolences and relate their relief that they did not hire Handverker Construction.
