Contractor ran away with my money! I had a horrible experience with JP at Crivello Bros Construction. I hired JP for an interior remodel and second-story addition for my house in Hermosa Beach. JP had recently completed a similar job for a mutual friend and came recommended. Unfortunately, I did not receive a similar experience as our friend and cannot recommend him to others.
I signed a contract with JP in October 2015 and to start work 1 week later. The entire job was projected to take 6 months. Nearly 6 months later in April, after multiple calls/texts/and other attempts to reach out, and receiving excuse after excuse from JP, only 20% of the initial demolition phase was complete. I fired him from the job for the breach in performance. He took nearly 6 months to complete 5-10% of the overall job.
Not only did I experience those delays, I gave him an initial payment of $15,000 (i.e. $5k to pre-pay the demolition line item in full and $10k to pay for lumber), yet no lumber was ever ordered or delivered. When I confronted JP, he told me that he spent all $15,000 I gave him on the demolition, even though the demo item was estimated at $5,000, and had the audacity to ask for more money. Further, he showed me a screenshot of his bank account, showing that he was over $40,000 in debt. I fired JP from my job on the spot. It's clear to me that he must have used the money intended on demolition and lumber on something else unrelated to my job.
I just filed a complaint with the Contractor's State License Board and will seek, at a minimum, the $10,000 that he ran away with. Hopeful no one else falls into this trap.
