The very best contractor we have ever used is Lane Larson and Custom Finishes. We have an old Vic (1887) which means lots of old paint, old siding, and some wood rot. Lane is so knowledgable about products, methods, and historic building troubleshooting. He is bothering a painter and a gen. contractor, so when needed he will repair and strengthen problem areas. He is a proud artist in his ability to advise pros and cons of color and wear issues (really very important when wanting a house painted that won't need repainting or major touch-ups in a couple years. He can speak on the advantages and uses of caulk choices until your eyes glaze over. He is brilliant at suggesting added trim colors for old Vics, but also did a great job on my sisters Pierson home. Our house was painted by Lane about 9 years ago and people still stop to compliment us. He understands, and explained to us, why he periodically blended a bit of one color into another to create a more cohesive assosiation of multiple colors, thereby avoiding harsh transitions from one color to another. As a gen. contractor he rebuilt our weakening front steps, replacing aged wood and strengthening joints, without affecting the historic integrity. Yes, we are always awed by Lane's knowledge and pride in his work. You can get cheaper and faster painters who can do a house over a weekend with a paint gun with little prepping. But we see those houses being repainted every 4-5 years. But if you want a knowledgable, communicative painter who's work will protect you home and make passers by smile, Lane is your man. (Sadly, Lane is approaching semi-retirement and selects the jobs he takes on.)
