I've been debating posting this for awhile, but figure I might as well finally share my thoughts on working with FishCreek to build our home.
First off, we love the floor plan. The layout is great and exactly meets our day to day needs. The workmanship seems to be pretty high overall. Some things, like the interior paint, seem to be lacking. But overall the finishes are good.
Despite that, I wish we had never built with FishCreek and instead gone with another builder. The main reason for this is communication.
Ever since we signed the contract to build the home, communication has been an issue. From selecting our finishes to getting information about timelines. We struggled to get any updates about the progress being made on our home as we built, what selections we needed to make soon and what costs were involved. Ever since moving in, communication about warranty issues has been severely lacking. They frequently ignore texts, emails and phone calls, opting to leave you in the dark instead of ever replying. Let me outline a few examples.
1. Our house had some rock under the lot that they needed a special tool to excavate. We were told this extra cost would be coming out of our pocket, which is totally reasonable. They performed this work in November of 2021. The costs would have been known at that point. I asked repeatedly for months how much this would cost. It wasn't until June of 2022 that I was finally able to find out it would be an extra $7,000. Again I understand that cost was on us. But waiting 8 months to tell us just a month before we were scheduled to close was quite startling when trying to account for all the costs of moving cross country and building a home. It was even more frustrating when I had asked many times over what those costs were and those questions were just ignored.
2. When signing our contract, we were told we would have a dedicated designer to help us make sure our options all matched. This person would help us make sure we had all the selections made at appropriate times and keep track of selections we had made. This did happen for a month or two, but then again, we had radio silence for months. Finally when we asked another employee about the coordinator they told us that design coordinated was no longer with the company though this was never communicated to us. Selections we had already made became lost to FishCreek. No one helped us coordinate our decisions as we were promised and we sometimes had to dig into old text and email conversations to prove we had made a selection previously when they tried to argue that we had never told them an option we wanted. This became very frustrating as we are not experienced designers ourselves. The contractors had to advise us in some situations that what we were selecting wouldn't match, which we were grateful for. But no one helped with the overall design coordination. This aspect was pushed heavily when they were selling us on the home.
3. We were supposed to have a 1 year warranty checklist we could give them to address when we hit our year mark (which we hit within the last month). We went through our home, marked issues we found. Put them in a Google doc with photos of each item. I emailed this list and texted it to them several times and they never responded. It wasn't until I spoke to the realtor we worked with and mentioned these issues that I finally got on a phone call with them. I was told these items would be addressed. Our contract states they will address these 1 year warranty issues. I've emailed and or texted once or twice a week for 2 months about these items. I don't believe they have ever even looked at the list in our Google doc. The one time I spoke to them on the phone they were not familiar with any items on the list, despite me having sent it a month prior.
I have very little hope they will ever address our concerns. There is more I could say, but I believe the points above show a fundamental lack of care about their customers and the quality of the service they deliver. I've never worked with a company that ignored me so profoundly. I would much rather be told no they won't address something or that it'll take a few months than be met with complete silence.
Because of this, despite loving the home itself, I would never choose to work with their company again. The poor communication has permanently tainted my relationship with them, and with my own home. I strongly recommend not working with FishCreek.
