    Deck
    $40,000

We hired Jim Lowry, the owner of Full Capture Remodeling, to build our deck in May 2023. Our plan involved a deck, new pavers, and tongue-and-groove under the deck to complete our outdoor living space. Based on feedback from several contractors, we would have the deck done first, followed by the pavers, and finish with the tongue-and-groove.
My wife manages properties and always prioritizes family-owned businesses vs working with large companies. We consider the contractors we work with as close partners and, in some cases, close friends. Jim grew up in Camas and told us how the city had changed. He also talked about making his backyard his showroom. The initial experience was great, so we put down a deposit to have the work start in May, hoping it would be complete by summer.
Unfortunately, the project's outcome hasn’t been as expected, and we’re currently looking for another contractor to come out and address the problems identified with the deck to complete the project. The specific issues:
    - The underdeck that Jim installed is still leaking. To be fair to Jim, he came out several times to try to remedy the issues with the leaks but stopped responding several months ago. We considered the possibility that some leaks are normal and spoke with another contractor about installing the tongue and groove. We were told to have the leaks remedied before doing additional work.
    - The same contractor who said to have the leaks addressed noted that cable railing shouldn’t be any longer than 30 continuous yards, and ours was done with one continuous line, which is ~200 yards. The contractor noted that was the reason for the loose cables, which is a safety hazard.
Other poor finish elements exist. For example, the railing at corners is uneven with sharp edges.
In addition, there were several other issues related to professionalism:
    - My sprinkler system stopped working when Jim and his crew were digging for the deck posts. I had reseeded for spring and when I discussed with Jim he said, “At least you’ll have a nice deck to watch your grass die.”
    - Jim and his crew used the side of our yard as a bathroom. Most contractors we hire bring a portopotty. Our landscaper offered to let Jim and his team use their portopotty. We would have been fine letting his people use our bathroom, primarily out of respect for my neighbors who sit near that area.
Plenty of good contractors have projects that don’t go well. The great ones take accountability when things don’t go well. I had a car detailer from whom I bought a detailing package. He kept having to reschedule because of his hectic school schedule and offered to refund me a portion of the package. He was such a nice kid and was so apologetic that I told him not to worry about it and wished him luck in college.
Jim seemed indifferent and annoyed when we brought up issues with the deck. The last time my wife received a response from him was in August, saying he received her message but was working in an area where he didn’t get service. Since then, he hasn’t responded. It’s been nearly two years since the project, and we’re out $40K for a deck that we will need to hire someone else to repair.
