We had an extremely traumatic experience with Norman and right now are in the process of suing him. He bid low to win the contract, created urgency to sign the contract taking advantage of our hard deadline since we had a tiny baby, didn't follow the agreed payment schedule threatening us if we didn't pay he'll have to delay the completion since he doesn't have sufficient funds to buy raw materials and in the process took 90% of the payment finishing 25% of the work that too at unacceptable quality and taking twice the time originally promised for the entire work. The contract itself had major loop holes such as no mention of estimated date of completion, no clear mention of material quality and no division of labor and material cost.
It was a nightmare for us dealing with Norman, where he hardly responded to our calls, hardly showed up at the site, lied while taking money that he needed to buy raw materials which never arrived, ordered wrong material even after sharing the exact model names and continuously threatened us that he can choose to disappear and forced us to pay out of the decided schedule. He kept extending the project by a week every week until we ran o0ut of lease and had to stay with a new born in a hotel. We had to finally shift in our home with no working kitchen and just a bare minimum bathroom.
His crew itself was highly unskilled and struggled most days since they didn't have the right equipments/rough material and no clear instructions from Norman to effectively do their job. Sometimes we had to run to Home Depot to buy raw rough material for them. At any given day the were not more than 1.5 people at the site when 3 were promised and some days only one person showed up for 2 hours. More than half of the work he did had to be redone from scratch by our new contractor. The mistakes done were so silly, here are examples: air vent pipes used for plumbing, kitchen backsplash tiles were laid haphazardly with a grouting gap generally left for floor tiles, wrong drywall material used for bathroom which was not water proof, kitchen sink plumbing was done in a way that it was impossible to install a food crusher, improper sloping of bathroom floor, plumbing and electric connections were way off, the shower installed was crooked, kitchen cabinet handles installed didn't align to each other. The list of blunders was huge and some permanent that couldn't be undone.
After all this we agreed for a generous settlement and he missed three chances to pay the agreed settlement amount back leaving us with no option but sue him.
People buy a house with their hard earned money and with lots of dreams and hopes, and no one deserves to go through such a bad and traumatizing experience. We initially thought to not sue him or share a feedback that can be disastrous to his business, but if we didn't take a step, another family somewhere, probably also with a new born, would have to go through this trauma.
