Very, very bad Experience! I wouldn't request he design a dog house. He tied up over 3 1/2 years of my time to design a porch and NEVER followed design suggestions offered/requested. His responses were that my ideas were too this, or too that, or didn't match the neighborhood, etc. but kept asking what I wanted. Always promising he would come up with a grand design but- NEVER came up with one. Didn't even call me- I always had to make contact with him. I met with him less than 8 times and more times than not he would ask me where we stood on the project! Reeally?
He was well aware that the property was going to be a location for a business I was starting and his inattention cost me $100,000's in lost revenue for his 3+ year delay, caused health problems, and nearly caused a bankruptcy. He was repeatedly updated as to what was occurring in terms of the progression of the business, and licensing, and because of what was transpiring on the inside of the property. It was obvious the plans were nearing completion… but for his responsibility to the exterior.
At more than one point I suggested that we part ways and his response was “good luck finding somebody in this town to design a porch”, thus minimizing the importance of my job and further minimized me by his uninvited personal and very inappropriate comments. Mr. Freeman is every bit as creepy as he looks!
Call it what you wish but this “porch” measures 12’ by 54’, covered with multiple roof lines, so it is not a 6’ x 8’ structure we’re talking about. According to my new architect, this is a very nice project that any number of the local architects would be happy to design for me.
Mr Freeman was also advised that the Chamber of Commerce wanted to schedule the event for the Grand Opening but that did nothing to motivate him to finish the job. I again advised that the state was waiting to do a final inspection of the property, and he further was aware that the existing approach and entrances would not meet the standards for handicap, thus is why he’s redesigning the entire front of the property!! Duh!!
We went to the Zoning Board of Appeals and he was a laughing stock. I asked him what I needed to do to prepare and he responded, “nothing ”. As the day approached, my having not talked to him in 7 weeks I thought that I should prepare somehow. Therefore I took pictures and created individual books for each Board Member so they would better understand the importance of my obtaining a variance. He called me the day before and wanted to get together to review things before we approached the Board. Well, he was almost late for the meeting so we did not have a chance to discuss anything. Mind you, I spent $640 to appear before this board to get a variance from 8’ to 12’ and while we were waiting to be called he asks me how I felt about 10’ versus 12’. I told him absolutely not! He responded by saying I should seriously consider it as I might get completely denied and end up with my porch being 8’? REALLY? I could have save $640 and ended up the same.
His contribution to that meeting was, he stood before them holding rolled up plans on which he would attempt to point out certain things but they kept rolling up like an unruly, broken window shade. I was mortified!! The Board Members gestured among themselves about my book, and I was told by the Chairman that my information well assisted the board in them making their decision. It was unanimously approved! No fault of Mr. Freeman! What an idiot! Several weeks later I was asked by a person on the board how I ended up hiring him.
Money was never an issue for me- but ironically, to date he owes me a refund for funds not earned as I was paid in advance. But he wants me to sign a Hold Harmless Agreement drawn up by a some probate attorney because he knows I am weighing my options and consulting attorneys for damages.
He is ill regarded in the planning division at the city, and he is regarded the same by several fellow members at the local AIA group (American Institute of Architects). He is pathetic! Avoid this guy at ALL costs, or it will in turn, have a huge cost!!

    STAY AWAY!!!!!
