I would absolutely not recommend him. Hatheway is a charming man. However, I believe he is tired and semi-retired. He indicated no real interest in offering any advice or providing any ideas that would add to the concept we already had about the projected renovation. We are living with some mistakes that even a junior architect should have picked up. This was very disappointing. We also paid Hatheway an extra fee to regularly supervise the construction, something he did not do.He misled into believing he was experienced in filing paperwork with NYC Dept. of Buildings, but he was baffled or surprised at every step of the process which typically resulted in large unexpected fees.Through inexperience or intention, Hatheway misrepresented the time each stage of the process would take. The result was what we thought would take three months, took a year. Among other inconveniences and expenses, we had to pay to have the contents of our apartment in storage for a year.Hatheway provided the names of three contractors. Two of those recommended by Hatheway, clearly did not understand what the project entailed and the third was slick, sophisticated and ridiculously overpriced. We made the mistake of hiring him even though he required that we pay a large percentage of any materials or items such as sink or bathroom cabinets we bought on sale.

John does great work. We used his architectural services to gut renovate a 5,200 sq. ft. brownstone many years ago and to gut renovate a 625 sq. ft. one-bedroom apartment in 2017. He met with our contractor and us every Tuesday morning before work to review the work to date and solve any construction issues that arose, thus avoiding problems after the fact. We recommend him highly.

I worked with John from roughly 2013-2015 to design and ~80% gut renovated a brownstone in Park Slope. John acted as architect + contractor administrator to oversee the project. We are very happy with the finished product. John has done so many brownstones over his career and it really showed during the process, we felt this was a real advantage to working with him.Something to be aware of - John runs a small business and often seems to be a bit understaffed. I had to take careful notes and check twice to make sure work during the contractor admin phase was done properly. I occasionally had to chase loose ends. On the other hand his experience definitely saved us significant $ during the execution of the project.
