I first hired Mr. Hirano to redesign my garden on Cole Street in Cole Valley, in 1996. He was extremely meticulous and worked very hard on a design plan, and executed it beautifully. After I had children, my spouse and I moved to a larger home in the Richmond area of San Francisco. I still have the detailed, beautiful blueprint he created when updating an Asian style garden, with an old, beautiful Japanese maple tree, ornamental flowering plums and a goldfish pond. Mr. Hirano added a curved “river” of smooth beach rocks flowing into the pond. He very carefully pruned the plum trees and Japanese Maple, and also added a beautiful pair of Ash trees, one in each corner. He lead his workers carefully weed, lay down a fabric barrier over all the soil, and covered that with bark. He then added Arizona flagstone for a natural, flat surface to allow for a small table and chairs. Hydrangeas were added to complement an old camellia. I appreciate his careful and thoughtful design plan, as well as the implementation of the plan, resulting in a beautiful and serene garden. I am attempting to contact him again, since I haven’t seen him since before the Covid pandemic.
