    Install a porcelain paver patio
    $4,500

I hired Jay Welty Landscaping to install a large porcelain paver patio in my backyard. I selected the company because the owner said he had 27 years of experience.
    • In my opinion, the owner was short tempered, had a poor attitude, and was rude and disrespectful.
    • In California, contractors are required to provide their customers with a written contract for all projects over $500, but I never received one.
    • When the porcelain pavers were ordered, a mistake was made. The size of the patio required 100 pavers at a cost of $2,409, but 300 pavers were ordered at a cost of $7,227. Fortunately, I caught the owner’s error before the pavers were delivered.
    • It looked as though the porcelain pavers were installed incorrectly because the pavers were installed with porcelain to porcelain contact. The installation instructions stated “Don’t ever install porcelain pavers without the required 3/16” space between them and plastic spacers should be used.” When I brought the problem to the owner’s attention, he insisted that I didn’t know what I was talking about until I showed him the installation instructions and the video that is posted on the manufacture’s website. As a result, the owner agreed to re-install the pavers correctly.
    • It seemed that the owner was too busy to monitor the quality of the work that was being performed by his staff.
    • I set up an account with a local landscaping supply company for Jay Welty Landscaping to purchase materials and supplies that was needed for my project. When I didn’t receive an item that was charged to my account, I asked the owner for a refund but I didn’t receive one.
    • I was disappointed at how long it was taking to install the patio because it seemed like it was taking forever.
    • I didn’t like it when Jay Welty Landscaping walked off the job before the patio was completed because I had to hire another person to finish the work.
    • I was asked to pay the final invoice prior to the patio being 100% complete. I didn’t pay the final invoice because the patio wasn’t complete and I thought that I was being over charged. Jay Welty Landscaping took me to Small Claims Court and the judge deducted $750 from his final invoice.
    • I paid the judgment and I was happy that the judge reduced his final invoice by $750, but I was still faced with removing the property lien, that he placed on my home. I felt as if my nightmare was never going to end.
    • In my opinion, when contractors initiate litigation against their customers, it’s not a good substitute for providing quality work or good customer service.
