  Pondless Waterfall and landscaping

  When we decided to explore having some type of water feature installed on our property the first person we contacted for input and ideas was Joel. After meeting with Joel and hearing his ideas we knew we did not need to reach out to anyone else. Joel was realistic and straightforward; I would say he under promised and over delivered for sure!! Joel and Sandy showed us sketches of a pond-less waterfall and stream that we thought looked amazing, well the outcome was ever better than we expected! It is not often you find a company and contractor that show up everyday on time, are respectful of your property, complete a project quicker than you thought, and make it look even more grand and exquisite than you ever imagined. I built a custom home 5 years ago and have used many contractors for different projects over the years, Joel is easily one of the best I have had the pleasure of using. Since the initial project Joel and his team have completed several boulder gardens, a flagstone patio, low-voltage lighting, and will return later in the spring to install another patio, stone stair, and an outdoor firepit. I would recommend Joel and team to anyone looking to add a true statement piece to their home.

  One more summer enjoying our backyard. Several years ago we had Pondscapes install a small pond and waterfall in our backyard. The next year we added a connecting pond which is crossed by a small bridge. In the fifty years we have lived in this house our back has never been more beautiful. We watch sparrows bathe in the waterfall, , chipmunks and squirrels drink from the sides, frogs sit on the rocks in the sun, an occasional grand dog takes a swim, our neighbors bring over their grandsons to see the fish and the frogs,. One of our granddaughters has added gnomes and fairies to sit on the rocks and we have planted flowers all around. It is a thing of beauty. Thank you Joel and Sandy for making this happen.

  Plants in front yard

  We had Joel do our front yard in March of 2018. We didn't know what we wanted but they came in and did a design and it was beautiful! They explained all the plants they were putting in and told us how to take care of them! They took out a few trees and the ugly plants we had. They built us a half wall and did everything in a timely manner. They answered all of our questions and were very polite. They did a very good job of cleaning up after they were done. We would recommend them to everyone! Our neighbors came over and told us how nice the yard looked when they finished.

  We had a very unattractive, unusable hill behind our home. We hired Joel to design and add a water feature. The pond and water feature transformed our backyard into a beautiful escape. We received many compliments on our new backyard. However, we decided a pondless feature would be a better option for us. Joel and crew redesigned the layout and changed it to a pondless water feature. We absolutely love it and continue to receive many compliments on our yard.

  We hired Joel Hilles of Pondscapes in October of 2010 to replace the liner of our 250,000 gallon pond. In addition, he was to make it easier to maintain and more natural looking. In the initial meetings with Joel, he came across very competent and confident that he could do the job well, so he was hired for his bid of $80,000. As the project progressed, he continued to request payment in advance of services, and it became apparent that the services were not being delivered. By June 2011, Joel had been paid the full amount of his bid ($80,000) and he had only completed about 40% of the work. Joel was continually over budget and lacking abilities to complete the job successfully. The biggest error (one of many) that he made was that he cut the brand new $20,000 pond liner that he had just installed 2 feet too short to make the pond operational. The pond is actually less full now than it was prior to Joel's work when the liner had a hole in it. The skimmer boxes in the pond were functional prior to his beginning, but since the lining was cut too short, he told me I needed new skimmer boxes, which he ordered and then didn't know how to install. The new skimmer boxes still aren't installed, although they are paid for.

  After repeated attempts to work with him (including giving him more money per his request) without a successful outcome, we finally told him to stop work. To date, Joel has received over $100,000 and the pond is non-functional as is. Several experts have visited the pond to determine what needs to be done to make the pond functional, and based on the state Joel left the pond in, the estimates are on the order of an additional $50,000.

  We had several people come look at our pond originally, and Joel's confidence and seeming competence won me over. He took advantage of our trust and generosity by continuously not being on schedule (not showing up for work when he said he would be), for not being up front in stating that this pond job was beyond his abilities, and for billing in advance of services that he never completed. We are writing this review because we don't want anyone else to go through what we have been through. We've lost over a hundred thousand dollars and are in a worse position than when we started. We strongly recommend you look elsewhere when looking for a pond landscaper.
