Keyvan Yousefy
Sole Owner
No, we could not recommend Kevin Yousefy. He assisted us with the design of our new kitchen in June/July 2019. We were naive in not requesting a project end date and he never offered one throughout the months the project was in progress. We asked him for a pay schedule, which he stated he would give to my husband. Kevin never gave us a pay schedule at any time throughout the project. He would come by when he needed money or we specifically asked him to come. We paid him in increments as products were purchased and delivered.
There were long periods of time when we did not hear from him. This occurred from October-December. Of course, we acknowledged that we were not his only clients. His voicemail was full most often when I called 1-2 times/week to inquire where we were with the remodel. Twice I left a voicemail message stating that I was concerned for his health or safety and hoped that he was alright. He would then return the call. He had a lot of excuses for the slow progress of the project through the months of November and December. One of them was the fact that when we removed a portion of the wall in the kitchen, we needed an inspector to provide approval due to a waterline in the wall. We waited 10-14 days for the inspector to come out and to get the approval. Another excuse was that he had "so many jobs that just got squished together and he had to wait for us to get approval from the inspector related to the water line." Therefore, he just "moved on" with his "other projects." During the holidays, while we had our makeshift kitchen in the garage and the weather was getting cold and rainy, his communication was almost none existent. I attributed this to the fact that he was working on other projects and he seemed overwhelmed whenever I did reach him. I was impressed that he remained polite and respectful even though he was so busy. From our observation, he seemed very disorganized and a poor planner. He would come to the house with a fresh legal pad, and we would go over plans as if these issues had never been previously discussed.
After the holidays and his continued lack of communication, I left him a message with a brief timeline of his service to us. I offered to get another GC to help us finish the project. At one point, I left a message that I was considering calling the CA Contracting Board. All of a sudden, we heard back from him. He began planning for deliveries, subcontractors were scheduled for tile and cupboard installment.
There were several errors. For example, we had two different quartzite countertops. I am so glad we were home the day the installers came. They did not know which color went on the kitchen counter and which went on the island. We had white and gray cabinets. The island was gray. There was an insufficient amount of gray cabinets for the island. The worker painted the white cupboards gray in our kitchen. The fumes were overwhelming, much like sticking your nose in a bottle of fingernail polish remover. Our neighbor became irate and spoke to the workers about the smell coming into her home. Her son was home from school, ill, that day. She complained to us, stating how rude the worker(s) were to her.
In the plans for the kitchen, there was a pantry door with glass insert. Kevin, stated "oh you can go pick one up at Home Depot." We did purchase our door from a lumbar company. We brought the fact to Kevin that we purchased the door, so the cost of the door needed to be taken off our bill, which he agreed to do.
At the end of the project, Kevin came with several thousand dollars of "extras." My husband did an extensive analysis of the costs being added on to the original contract. According to the contract, all additions and additional costs were to be confirmed by the client prior to becoming part of the project cost . We were never notified of any additions or changes when they occurred that would equal several thousand dollars. A similar issue is when we were being charged several hundred dollars for the cost of glass in two cupboard doors. We checked with our local glass company and found the cost to be approximately less than $150.
At the end of the project in January 2020, We were able to work with Kevin, showing him items such as this, in which were being overcharged for product. The cost of labor for all installation remained the same, to the best of my knowledge. After showing Kevin, our extensive analysis of cost, we were able to lower the cost of "additions" several thousand dollars.
We may have met up with Kevin during a time that he was going through issues personally or professionally. However, I would not want anyone to experience what we did after hiring Kevin Yousefy to remodel our kitchen.
