BUYER BEWARE: My brand new house has suffered breakage, leaks, malfunctioning equipment, unfinished installations, and poor construction. Worse, my dealings with MAG Construction Management have been riddled with a steady stream of ongoing bullshit — misleading information, deceitful tactics, neglect, and one false promise after another.
I have only ever written one bad review in my life. This is the second. Here’s the story:
Six years ago, I worked at a bar when I decided to quit my job, pursue my dreams, and start my own business. Five years later, the business was thriving, I cashed out a piece of it, and decided to buy a house for myself with a backyard for my dog. Dream come true, right? Well… Unfortunately, over the past year, MAG Construction and its head, Michael Valenzuela, has turned that dream into something of a nightmare.
The house is a new build and under warranty for a year. Mike assured me any issues would be taken care of promptly. I told Mike I trusted him, but after a year of living in the house he built, he's unfortunately proven himself to be unreliable, incompetent, and even deceitful.
There's a character limit for this review, so the following is a list of just some of the many things that went wrong:
-The lock on the sliding door entryway to the side of the house was missing when I moved in. I told them to make this a priority as it was a security issue. Guess how long it took MAG to install the lock? Take your guess and double it. I'm going to bet your guess is still too low… SIX MONTHS! I tried having it installed myself, but the lock company I consulted said they'd have to special order the lock, which would cost a few hundred dollars.
-The deck outlets broke after about a month. They were “fixed" until, a month later, they broke again and had to be fixed once more.
-There's another outlet that doesn't work. I've complained half a dozen times and they still haven't fixed it.
-I wanted to have a pool built in the backyard and, before I bought the house, I told Mike what I wanted and where. He said no problem. He even sent me a pool design. After I bought the house, I found out that it was impossible to build that pool as we discussed. Mike failed to mention the drainage easement in the yard. Either he forgot (unlikely) or he deliberately misled me to make a sale. When I complained, he said I could still build the pool we discussed, I would just have to demolish the pergola and put it there, as if that somehow made up for his lies.
-Floorboards on the deck were not properly installed. Some of them bent upward, making for great toe-stubbing material. And one of the boards actually caved downwards. They fixed it, maybe 2 months later.
-Floorboards on the rooftop were bent and warped due to improper installation. Mike had originally told me the warping was intentional for drainage reasons. I was a first time home buyer, so I trusted him. Later, a construction guy who I was hanging out with came over and told me that was straight up bullshit. I complained to Mike. It took him about another couple months to start fixing it. Still not finished to this day.
-Heaters broke… twice. First time, I think they had to install a new breaker. And second time, I believe there was an issue with the furnace. Luckily I have extra blankets.
I could go on. A couple weeks ago, I had another home inspection done, because my 1 year warranty ends soon. The new home inspection report came up with over 20 issues! Improper caulking, separation of trimming, gaps in sheetrock emerging, sealant separating at windows, etcetera.
I asked the inspector if this was normal. He said, “Not for a house that’s only one year old. Whoever build this did a crappy job.”
My business philosophy is: if you give me your hard earned money, then I will do everything in my power to deliver on my promises to you. Mike and MAG Construction's philosophy is: I will make whatever promises I have to in order to get you to give me your hard earned money, and then I will do the bare minimum to make sure I don't get sued.
