    Beware of variable hidden fees.
    Beware of variable hidden fees.
My wife was trying to be proactive by calling ahead of time to understand the fee structure. She was told it was a $75 service call fee, plus $80 per hour for labor. The plumber was at our house for less than one hour. She offered to pay on the spot, but was told that the bill would be sent in the mail later. When we got the bill, the labor charge was for 1.5 hours. When we called to ask about it, we were told that the clock for labor time starts when they leave the previous house, so it could be anywhere from zero dollars to an extra $40 or more, depending on where they are coming from. I asked what the “service call” fee was for if the driving time was already incorporated into the labor. The answer was that the service fee was for the cost of gasoline plus the overhead of supplies on the truck. I understand the need to account for these things, but I advised the owner to clearly explain all of this the next time someone tries to call ahead of time to understand the fee structure. The problem was not urgent, so if we had known that the labor time was variable depending on where they were coming from, we would’ve told them to just wait until they were in the neighborhood, or we would’ve just gone with someone else.
