The entire job was done without the proper permits despite our expressed desire to pull permits if they were so needed. Originally, we had planned to vault the ceilings and widen out doors, and the place had been to hire an architecture and get permits. When we reduced the scope of the work to tray ceilings and keeping the existing doorways, both Jon and Chris informed me that we were not doing work that required permits. I asked them at least three times before starting the project if they were sure and all three times they said yes.
I found out last week, at the end of the renovation, that the assurance they gave me (in which I relied on, because I trusted them) was not accurate. While I do not believe they purposely mislead me, I am now left dealing with a mess of their creation.
According to the Town of Brookhaven, the three permits that I needed for this job are electrical, plumbing, and demolition. I now have to get these permits after the project has been down and there is a real possibility that they town will want to see something that is behind a wall and require me to tear that wall down. This could happen even if everything is to code; if something wasn’t to code, they could make me take that part down.
I cannot give a fair assessment on the work until the Town comes and does their inspection, and I’ll update this in several months after that is done. I will say working with Jon and Chris has been a pleasure and the work looks AMAZING. I have gotten so many compliments even before it was completely done. When we couldn’t stay in our house during demolition, they stayed working until midnight to get the job done. They are so dedicated to their craft and do care about their customers happiness. Sadly, they don’t know the code or at least when it comes to whether they do or do not need permits.
Again, I will update this review after the inspection. Jon and Chris have given me no reason to believe they are not trustworthy, but people's true colors come out best when problems arise. I am hoping the only ends up being something that’s annoying but with the help of Jon and Chris it is resolved in a manner that makes the process time consuming but not a determinant.
I hope to come back in a few months and say the renovation was done perfectly, it passed all the inspections it needed to pass, the only problem was a permit mix up which was annoying but with Jon and Chris’s help it was dealt with.
