David Price
Unfortunately, I have to rate Payton May Homes very low. I hired them to build an addition onto my home and to redo an outdoor deck. Overall, had David (the owner) provided me slightly better communication and my lien release letter (as promised many, many times) I would have recommended him despite all the other issues. However, those were two significant issues. I would, therefore, not recommend him nor his company. Unfortunately, he just didn’t earn my trust. See below for the cons and pros of his work.
Cons:
-David (the owner of Payton May Homes) was not able to come through on one very important request I had. I asked him for a lien release letter many, many times. This letter protects the homeowner for the contractor’s work. Essentially, it releases the homeowner of any liabilities incurred or caused by the contractor and should be standard practice in the construction business. However, David never provided me this lien release letter despite him telling me over and over (and over months) that he would provide me one. Then, guess what?! A lien was placed on my home one day by another contractor that had contracted with Payton May Homes. Because Payton May Homes never provided me the lien release I could have been held liable for his work. Payton May Homes paid the other contractor so the lien went away, but I still have not received this letter to date (meaning I could still be sued in the future).
-There was poor communication. I had three conversations with David about my need for better and more consistent communication. Had he just provided a weekly update or something to that effect, I would have been much more satisfied.
-We had a pretty significant roof leak that Payton May Homes had to come out and fix multiple times, but they never quite finished addressing the issue. There was still damage to our home that had not been fixed properly by Payton May Homes. My husband ended up fixing it himself.
-We’ve learned, in the heat of the summer and the coldest days in the winter, that our new room has inadequate ducting for the size of the room. So, it gets very cold and very hot in the room when compared to the rest of the house – a difference of about 5 degrees.
-The outdoor deck work was subpar. A lot of the nails were sticking up, and the wood planks are too far apart and do not sit flush.
-We designed the ceilings to be 10’, but Payton May Homes accidentally messed that up by building the flooring too high (they measured wrong), but they were able to put in a vaulted ceiling instead to (sort of) fix the problem.
Pros:
-The additional room, once finalized, does look nice and blends well with the rest of our home
-Payton May Homes was able to build out our design (nearly) exactly as we requested it
