    $8,000

I am absolutely disgusted by the poor quality of workmanship Schwabees provided when we hired them to build up and reshape the garden on our corner lot on a warm day in December. They were hired to transplant several dormant plants, add new plants, place boulders we already had available, create a kidney shape, and keep the surrounding decorative rock out of the new dirt. A drip line and old weed barrier were already there, along with two young trees. (Unfortunately, they did not include plans to add new weed barrier and mulch as we had expected, saying that is not a normal part of their landscaping projects. Really!? They simply dumped the new dirt on top of the old week barrier, leaving some of it still exposed when they were finished. And the shape of the project looked more like a kidney with a tumor. They didn’t seem to notice that on their own. So I had to bring that to their attention to correct it. Ugh!

My intense ire is the result of Schwabees doing poorly with so many other aspects of this landscaping project that I wondered if their supervisor and crew had any experience doing this type of work at all. First of all, they did not label or seem to dig up enough of the root system of the existing plants to give them the best chance of surviving the rest of the winter. They just put them in a clump near the edge of the project and asked if I could identify them afterward. I could not do so accurately since they had been cut back for the winter and I didn’t see the area of the garden from which they were removed. Also, I was to have been given some say in the kinds of new plants they added, but that did not happen. At a cost of $100 each to remove, replant and add new plants, they were certainly not worth that much nor the kinds of new plants I would have chosen. And the placement of all the plants appeared rather haphazard. Nor did they leave watering wells around each one for winter watering on warmer days. I had to add them myself. I just hope most of them will survive.

In addition, the Schwabees crew placed the original dripline hose on top of the ground with minimal attention to the placement of the driplines near the repositioned plants. Making things worse, several of the driplines that remained were cut and/or the heads were missing – without an effort to repair them. Much of this appears to have been disguised by partially covering them with dirt. Lastly, I specifically pointed out that there were way too many landscaping rocks left in the dirt. So the crew began to pick them out, but as soon as they were paid they stopped. It even appears that they threw more on after I left. My mistake, I should have waited until they were done before I paid them, but I was trying to work from home and only had time to check on their work during brief breaks.

In sum, I am SO disappointed and angry with the poor quality of work and attention they brought to this project. I wonder if all I will see in the Spring is a pile of dirt, rocks and dead plants. I strongly discourage anyone from hiring this company for a landscaping project. If you do, plan to supervise every aspect of it yourself.
