To convert a bedroom and storage area adjacent to our bedroom into a walk through closet and master

This is to relate what my experience was with the contractor Parker Southwick of Southwick Construction LLC.

The project was to convert a bedroom and storage area adjacent to our bedroom into a walk through closet and master bathroom.

After getting several bids we chose Southwick Construction with a start date of 11/22/2019 and with text message completion time of 2 – 3 weeks.

For the first 2 – 3 weeks Parker and his crew showed up sporadically and only working for a couple of hours when they did show up. After that they showed up just about everyday and their workday was always less than 6½ hours total each day.

Things progressed, although very slowly. When Parker installed the light and vent in the new bathroom I noticed that the ceiling had not been torn into so that venting could be installed. I was concerned because I did not want warm moist air being vented into the floor joists instead of to the outside, that would promote the growth of mold and become a health hazard. When I confronted Parker with my suspicions he said that it was vented to the outside. When I asked how he went through the floor joists to get to the outside he said that he went over to the venting from the old bathroom. Again, I asked him how he got through the floor joists to get to the existing venting and his reply was that he used a very rigid ducting. His son, who is part of his crew, backed him up on both replies. I then offered him $200 to show me the actual ducting with the provision that if there was no ducting that he would not get the $200. The next day he and his crew installed the ducting that he had said was already there.

I had asked him, before the ducting incident, if he would give me a estimate for installing a range hood in the kitchen upstairs. He said he didn’t need to and he would do it. He did not say it would be extra. He claims that later he said it would be extra and his son backed him up on it again. I have no recollection of that conversation. There was a $900 addition to the final invoice for “Oven Hood Install”

Before Parker and his crew started work I asked that the old bathroom be left functional until the very last possible moment so that we would not be without a bathroom downstairs. He said, “no problem”. He did not say anything about an extra charge for doing that. There was a $400 charge on the final invoice for “Extra Old Bathroom Tear Out After One Day”. It wouldn’t have been so bad if I had been told that it was going to be extra and how much extra initially.

By the way, what we were told would take 2 – 3 weeks turned out to be 9 weeks.

As of the writing of this review it has been over 6 weeks since they finished the renovation and they still have not hauled all their trash from the renovation site. I have sent text messages and e-mails to remind them but since I have gotten no replies I believe they have blocked my number and e-mail address.

I would not recommend Southwick Construction LLC but if you do hire them, watch & verify everything they do. Ensure that everything that is supposed to get done gets done. Get everything and any changes or additions, no matter how small, in writing and signed by everyone concerned. Do not pay last installment until EVERYTHING is done to your satisfaction.
