After my research, to take them to court, I would have to sue the GC that was the only one offering to work on my home. Not wanting to ruin someone else’s business, we opted to work with the GC to finish the job, leaving our only recourse a note on the web so someone else doesn’t go through what we have with this company.
After providing an large deposit we learned the Original Estimate was less than half the price of the final contract price. We negotiated an in-between price, and the day before our job was to start, our bank called and would not start our loan with Thomlin listed as the GC due to their credit history. After a long delay, Thomlin eventually found a General Contractor for us, who took on the contract and subbed the entire job back to Thomlin as he did not have the room in his schedule at the time.
Thomlin then insisted they could start our job in the winter despite our reservations of pouring a basement in December. After our basement foundation was set, the job sat for over 5 months. In addition, the workers decided to move dirt multiple times from front to back of home and broke all concrete in the process. Result, quoted $20,000, charged $53,000 due to completing the job during the winter. We were never notified of the increase in price, and also got stuck with a window that they ordered which wasn’t even the right size for the hole they created, broken concrete walkways that need to be fixed, and a basement that had constant water due to their poor workmanship (additional $8,000 to fix by someone else).
Even though they should have had a portion of the deposit left after our basement debacle, the job stalled due to issues with who will pay for materials up front between our bank and Thomlin, the job finally started moving again when we decided to front Thomlin even more money. Obviously, a horrible decision, but I just wanted my home and life back.
Not only were the architectural plans inaccurate and not feasible for code, Thomlin neglected to come by the job frequently and failed to tarp my home when the roof was off. To say it rained in my home is an understatement. The rain ruined my existing updated kitchen, only 2 years old, and additional resulting damage of water flow ruined an existing bathroom, existing carpet, flooring, drywall, warped cabinets, and destroyed furniture. Overall cost of damage at least $40,000 per my insurance agent. My insurance would not cover the damage as it was caused by contractor neglect and not natural causes. Thomlin informed me they would call and claim with their insurance, then would no longer return my phone calls or the GC’s calls.
We eventually cut our losses, accepted the cost, changed the locks and moved on with the GC as noted above. After all the emotional stress, financial stress of unplanned expenses, replacing almost every wall, and every floor, 1 year and 7 months later, we are finally moving back into our home. I cannot stress enough, do not use this company, it isn’t worth whatever they promise.
