Washington Iron Works Inc. traces its origins to 1875, when Solon Totten established the family blacksmith business in Sherman, Texas. After opening as Totten Bros. Blacksmith, the company became Washington Iron Works in 1881 and later shifted its operations to East Lamar Street in 1885. Originally producing wagon wheels, the business evolved over decades, with a foundry for cast iron products and later a machine shop specializing in steam engine repair and maintenance. During World War II, Washington Iron Works manufactured gun barrel molds for the Watertown Arsenal and salvaged diesel engine parts for the U.S. Navy’s Bureau of Ships, earning the Army-Navy “E” Award for production excellence. In the mid-20th century, the company began serving the natural gas pipeline and petrochemical sectors. Today, Washington Iron Works supports projects throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Europe, and the Far East, recognized as an authority in industrial service work.
