This review is for a project done in 2008. Wong Yiu Construction is great! I had found them outside of Buildzoom but had a great experience with them that I thought I'd share it with this community.
We wanted to knock down a fireplace that was in the middle of the house (to open up the living space) and install a gas fireplace at another location. Removing the fireplace involved some structural work, so it was not a trivial task.
After getting a number of quotes from several contractors (5-6), we decided to work with Danny. His price was not the lowest, but was in the ball park and he was very responsive (return calls within 24 hrs). He quoted the work to be 2 weeks, but it ran a little over as he was waiting for some fireplace components that I ordered that arrived late. He was pretty much done 2-3 days after his initial estimate, but came back to take care of some details that I caught during the walk-through, including wiping down the floors to get all the construction dust off.
His crew was always on time, courteous, and cleaned up after themselves everyday.
If he was late on something, he called and gave us a heads up. An example was that the new structural beam was much heavier than estimated, so he had to go and rent some hydraulic jacks to lift the beam up to the ceiling, which set him back a day. But we understood the delay so we were fine with it.
We had regular contacts with Danny throughout the project and he was very accessible and responsive. He often called us after the work day just to give an update. He asked some great questions that prompted us to check the plans and make some mid-stream corrections (that resulted in us having more usable space than originally thought). He was flexible to make changes to the original scope if it meant equivalent hours of work...When a question came up about the need for the new concrete footings, he called the structural engineer directly and got a resolution with him. He ended up following the plans.
When I discovered an oversight of missing a small wall for a built-in book shelf, he corrected it the next day and didn't miss a step.
When we did the final walk through with him, my wife and I independently wrote a thank you note to him and his crew with "Job well done!" Even though this project had a huge impact on the feel of our house, going from "obstructed" to "open", it was a relatively small project for Danny's crew to handle. Because it involved structural work, we wanted a licensed contractor to handle the work, and Danny came through beautifully. Looking back at the amount of work he had to do to make this project go smoothly, it was money well spent.
Danny and the Wong Yiu Construction crew are highly recommended!
