I hired Tim Hartwig to do electrical work at our townhome. I asked that he install lights in my basement crawl space and add electric to my attic, and bury the electrical pipes so we could put in a floor. He estimated it would cost roughly $1800-$2000. He was at the house 4 hours and charged me $2500 asking for cash/no check. He told me it would be best for him to be paid in cash. He said my brother will probably have questions and he would come back to finish the job. He never pulled any wire to the outlets, no outlet covers, the lines weren’t buried so that a floor could be put in and no additional circuit was run to the room.
When I called him he got extremely defensive and said he ran out of wire and would be back when my brother came to work on the attic. I called him several times after my brother arrived and he never returned, we were stood up. I asked that he reimburse me for time and material since my brother had to redo all his work and he never remediated the situation. We were robbed.
Transparency and ethics are important to running a business. It is not acceptable for a service provider to ask for payment in cash only and then not complete the agreed-upon work. It is important for customers to be able to trust the individuals they hire for services, especially when it comes to tasks as critical as electrical work. His actions of overcharging, not completing the job as promised, and lacking responsiveness to address and rectify the situation reflect poorly on his professionalism, integrity and reliability. It is advisable to avoid engaging in business with Tim Hartwig.
