Atlas installed a new Rheem A/C system in our home 8 years ago. A few days ago, when we asked for service on it as it was no longer cooling, we were presented with a hard-sell sales pitch for a complete new replacement (for another manufacturer whose T-shirt the tech was wearing) and a refusal to replace the coolant (R-22). $6000+ was what they wanted. The tech claimed that doing a replacement of the coolant violated EPA rules, and when pressed to give us a quote for doing a leak check on the system, said it would be $1000 just to do the check. He also told us that they had in recent years had problems with the Rheem A/Cs. We said no thanks and sent him on his way (paying $89 for the sales pitch masquerading as a service call).
An internet search on R-22 restrictions and the Consumer Reports review on A/Cs, including Rheem, seemed to contradict what we were told by the Atlas tech.
We hired someone else to service the system, referred to us by a friend who does general contracting. He discovered the original installation of the Rheem unit by Atlas was screwed up. Parts were put in backwards and the wrong fan setting was used such that the air flow for the whole system wasn't right from the get-go. He also did a complete leak check, cleaned the system out, and replaced the coolant , all for about $600. As for the "EPA restriction" on replacing R-22, that was just an out and out lie. Yes, the price of R-22 has gone way up due to an EPA restriction on the amount that may be manufactured, but that added maybe $200 to the total cost and did not preclude servicing our system instead of doing a complete replacement. These guys should be avoided. They're incompetent and deceptive and I wish we had known sooner.
