  Exterior Paint, Garage Door, Overhang Build, Siding Replacement

  We hired De Avila Construction to paint our house, replace damaged siding, build an overhang over our front door, and install a new garage door and opener.

  We scheduled an appointment with Julio, who owns De Avila Construction. He didn’t show up for the appointment, no phone call, email, or text. We reached out to him to find that he wasn’t in town. We should have left it there and went with someone else, but we rescheduled for the next day and met with him.
  
  We walked him through the property and discussed what we wanted him to do. We got a good vibe from him and he assured us that he would do quality work. When discussing the paint and he left a Sherwin-Williams swatch book for us to look through for colors. He told us that he would use Sherwin-Williams paint because it’s the best and it’s all he uses. The overhang was a simple 5x6 shingled roof with 2 posts, no flooring. The garage door was a basic roll up, windowed door with a new opener. The damaged wood siding was in the backyard and was just the bottom 15 inches. Overall, around 85 square feet of siding needed to be replaced.

  He quoted us $12,777 for everything and drew up a contract. During construction we asked him to hang a front door that we already had. It wasn’t included in the contract so we knew there would be additional cost.

  We were going to pay with a credit card, but he charges 3.5% so we paid by check which was fine. They showed up the next day and began work. We noticed that they were installing thinner siding than the existing siding. When we asked them why, they said it was cheaper and would use spacers to even it out. I’m sure that would have worked but it didn’t seem like the proper way to do it.
  
  Fast forward two days and it’s time to paint. To our surprise, they were using Dunn-Edwards paint, which wasn’t what he told us he was going to use. That paint is about half the price of Sherwin-Williams. No explanation was given for the bait and switch. They finished in 7 days and told us at the end that he was charging an extra $1,350 for hanging the front door and installing a keyset.

  When we walked around the house to inspect the work, the trim paint on all the windows and doors in the backyard wasn’t finished. The trim around the attic vents wasn’t painted at all. The garage door had loose and stripped out bolts. The overhang isn’t centered with the front door which is noticeable from the sidewalk. They also cut into the attic vent for the roof on the overhang which looks terrible.

  I hate leaving negative reviews but between the lies and corner cutting, I feel an obligation to warn people about what to expect if you hire De Avila Construction.
