I was not going to place a review of D-J Groundskeeping at first but then Dennis, one of the principals of the company, made an obnoxious phone call to me screaming at me that I was a “liar” and a “thief.” He was referring to something from the early spring when I contested the destruction of my lawn by him. We agreed to call in HIS FRIEND who works for a reputable and well-known lawn company to decide what happened and what should be done and to abide by his decision. The friend said that Dennis should reseed my lawn and the friend would help him. We ALL agreed to that.
After that Dennis sent a crew to do a spring clean-up and then sent people back to weed and to apply black mulch at my request. I send him an email about the workers on the second visit and the improper way they mulched. He texted me back that he would “send up a few guys to touch it up, we’re about 3 weeks booked out now and I was using those guys to just help out with the overload.” He added that, “Going forward I’ll make sure to have my A team at your property.”
No one came to touch up the poor job the two workers did with the weeding and mulching. I wrote him an email itemizing the problems such as:
The Mulch contained the following:
- Pieces of glass
- Chunks of wood
- Pieces of wood as large as 8” x 2”
- Pieces of rug
- A plethora of plastic and plastic film
- Pieces of a zip lock
- A key
- White pieces coming through the black mulch, which I had ordered
Other Mulch issues:
- The mulch was pushed up tight to the plants, which I have repeatedly asked them not to do.
- The mulch was also pushed up to the shingles on the house, which can cause termites according to my exterminator.
- I had asked for 2” of mulch but it was very unevenly applied with 4-5” in places and barely there in other areas. I am still evening this out. That cost me extra money because they wasted mulch.
- They also did not contain the mulch in the gardens with spill over to the walkway and driveway.
Two (2) men who came to weed brought no weeding tools with them and were doing it by hand. I had to show them how much more effective and efficient (He charges by the hour) the hoes were. They finally capitulated and used the hoes. However, when weeding the Nut Sedge, which was my major weed problem, they just pulled it up, which only served to spread it even more according to the Cornell Cooperative extension. So, I ended up with more weeds than I had started with.
I sent Dennis an email itemizing the problems listed above and some difficulties with the spring clean-up, such as improperly pruning my shrubs leaving dead wood on many plants and leaving the tops wider than the bottoms preventing the sun getting to the bottom of the shrubs despite my cautioning them about this.
I had used Dennis’ company for several years when I believe that he was starting out and he did a good job and I gave them a good review. However, as his business has grown the quality of their work and products has declined significantly.
In my last email to him, I asked Dennis to call me so that we can resolve the issues. [he had reduced the invoice a bit without my asking but it did not come close to remediating the mistakes and sloppy work that they had done. He called me but was screaming on the phone at me calling me a “liar” and a “thief” mostly referring to the lawn issue, which was settled months earlier and not mentioned in my letter at all. I could not get a word in edgewise and then he hung up on me!
I would NOT RECOMMEND this company! They do poor work and it is run by a real h
