"Reliable" would be the last word I would use to describe my experience with this company.
We requested 2 proposals, 1 for Ida-related damage repairs (drywall and painting), and 1 for the installation of basement stairs and door leading from our 1st floor to our basement apartment, the build of a sliding door closet, and installation of 3 windows. We only received 1 rudimentary version of for Ida-related damages. The other one was promised and never received, but we moved forward in good faith regardless.
Work started in mid-November and we were told everything could be wrapped up in a couple of weeks. Every few days there were excuses as to why it had to be pushed and drawn out. Other clients, personal emergency or no reason at all. Work times constantly changed and we were never sure if he would actually show up. Sometimes he arrived hours early, sometimes would decide to come days early, whatever mood he was in, we had to adjust our schedules to on zero to short notice. We tried to align these visits around our work schedules since my husband and I work from home and that didn't work out on several occasions. One request to keep noise down for one hour for an important work call was completely dismissed. Instead, a spam call was taken and he complained about it loudly while I tried to give a presentation on Zoom.
He was not always prepared with materials needed to complete the job of the day (tile glue, paint, door) and would only tell us when he arrived what he needed, further delaying the work and us having to run out and purchase the items. He would gaslight us by saying that he told us we needed to purchase certain items for him, which were lies and a way for him to cover poor project management skills.
Construction garbage was thrown on our front yard garden (along with their personal garbage) for us to dispose of. Doors, framing, concrete, tiles - we had to figure out how to get rid of.
After Christmas when inquiring about when all work would be completed, we received the very nasty response of "Don't you understand I'm busy?". Since then he has reached out twice - once to check on a window delivery and once on a random Sunday with no warning to see if he could come by to do some work which we declined because we had already given up on him and (after a lot of work) secured good contractors whole were willing to finish the work - and who did an excellent job. The arrogance and attitude exhibited through the entire experience was unbelievable. I have never heard someone speak to clients the way he spoke to my father and husband when they asked valid questions. On one particular visit, he left without saying a word to anyone about the work he had done or when he would be back, even though my father was standing in the front yard when he left. You would think this work was being done for free, it it definitely was not.
Results by Project:
Basement Renovation/Ida Repairs
Sloppy and inconsistent spackle, paint, and footboard job throughout the entire basement. Did not paint any footboards, just nailed them on with the primer that it was purchased with. Did not use tape to cover areas that should not be painted (new ceiling light, door handles). Did not bother to spackle and fill holes where previous door locks had been as well as large cracks. Simply added another hole to the door frame and left the old ones as is. A piece of border molding was so sloppily pieced together, I can't believe he has been in business for over 25 years with this level of ineptitude.
Closet Door Installation
Did not spackle and fill holes. Railing for closet sliding doors was left completely exposed on top due to incorrect moulding measurements.
Stair Installation
Blamed us for miscommunications HE had with the subcontractor he enlisted to work on our stairs and railing "Tony's Stair and Rails" (a business I would never recommend). He tried to pass off spindles on us that we did not want even after we showed him ahead of time what we were looking for. HE caused so much confusion, "Tony" refused to complete the job thinking WE were being difficult, and despite him telling us he would take responsibility and handle it, he reverted to telling us we should contact the Better Business Bureau to resolve it, taking himself out of the issue. The stairs were measured incorrectly and had to have additional supports added for them to be be used safely.
Window Installation
Although our other contractor install them, he ordered the windows and one was so off in measurement, that the window frame had to be rebuilt, costing us more than expected.
Bottom line: My husband and father spent hours cleaning up his messy and incorrect work. If you are looking for subpar, sloppy work, a know it all attitude, and don't mind having costs and timelines change on you at the last minute, then by all means work with GT Reliable. You won't be disappointed.
