We had the misfortune of being referred to Klutch Construction by our insurance adjuster after water damage occurred at our residence. Although I was told I could select another construction company, I was assured that the close relationship between my adjuster and the construction company would make the process easy and efficient. I received the estimate of coverage from the insurance company and asked Klutch Construction to give me their estimate to repair, I was told by Klutch Construction that isn’t how things work, that they would replace and repair and not to worry about a budget to pick what I liked, and they would make it work. I agreed, assuming that they were reputable since the insurance company referred them.
The first clue that they were less than reputable occurred when I brought samples of flooring I liked. I was told they were out of my budget and to keep looking. When I pressed, the superintendent gave me a budget of $3.50SF for the floors, the floor I liked was $5.50SF. I discovered the insurance company listed the cost of replacing my floors at $11.50 SF, and, in addition, the insurance company had allotted the contractor an additional $2.50 SF for overhead and profit. This situation occurred with almost every selection or choice we made. I was told it wasn’t in my budget, I would find what the insurance company stated replacement would cost, and they would eventually get something similar to what I wanted. It was as if they told me an amount much less than the insurance company estimated on purpose.
My problems were compounded by Klutch Construction subbing the work out. I was guaranteed work would be in process at my house most days Monday-Friday. This was not true; sometimes, it would be two weeks with no one showing up at the home. When I asked about it, I was told this is how construction works. They would start work, then tell me they didn’t have a plumber available. At one point; they asked our long-time plumber, who was at the house replacing a water heater, to put valves in so they could start tiling. The person who subbed the job out to quit eventually, and I was left to pick up the pieces. The issues were endless, from a 1-inch gap between the new floors and my baseboards to streaks in all the woodwork. Eventually, Klutch Construction sent in their “A-Team,” and they did a good job finishing much of the work. When I received the final accounting and request for final payment, 91 items listed as completed were not done. I paid for the items completed and brought in a handyperson to complete the list. Two months later, I had water leaking from one of the bathrooms. Klutch Construction brought a friend who was not a licensed plumber but a “thermal specialist” who determined the leak was due to my plumber incorrectly installing the valves at their request. I received a letter telling me to contact the plumber that they would not be fixing the problem.
I later discovered that the owner of Klutch Construction was a former insurance adjuster who worked in the same office where our claim was assigned and with the person who recommended we use them.
I do NOT recommend Klutch Construction to anyone. They were not transparent with costs, did not live up to their promises, and the work was subpar.
