I would not recommend using Nautilus Construction & MGMT for any construction projects. Tom Lerch doesn’t stand behind his work, doesn’t return phone calls and does poor quality work. I bought a house he built for approximately $1.7 million. Every nail (literally hundreds) on the two story portion of my house that was used to hold cement board in place has started popping out. (See Picture) Tom blamed it on the wind. He should have used screws but took a short cut to save money.
I’ve also had water start to leak from inside the one of my walls from faulty plumbing work Tom did as well. Mold has started to form on the inside wall and is creating a dangerous living environment in one of the bedrooms.
I called Tom to discuss all this. It took many calls before he could work me into “his” busy schedule. He showed up and then literally disappeared for two months. I called him once a week and texted but he was too busy to give me the curtesy of a return phone call. My girlfriend even tried calling him and we reached out to his wife and got no response.
Tom eventually sent me an email telling we he only warranted his work for one year. I sent him some current Washington State case law saying that for construction defect he was liable for 6 years. Tom didn’t seem to care and made it clear he didn’t stand behind his work. He told me I didn’t have a leg to stand on because that was just the way things were on the island since he was in such high demand.
I let Tom know that my time had value too and I wasn’t going to keep asking him to stand behind his work much longer. He eventually agreed to fix some of the defective work he had done but would not commit to a time because he was too busy. I told him I had been after him for two months and would give him two more months to get the work done. A week later, he said he didn’t respond well to threats and was not going to honor his word or his verbal agreement with me from a week earlier. Early on Tom had promised me he would respond to my communications within 24 hours and of course he never honored that.
I’m now at the point where I must hire an attorney because Tom seems to think the law doesn’t apply to him. I’ve gone to a class action attorney and will be forced to spend more of my time to get some resolution on this matter.
Dealing with Tom and Nautilus has been a terrible experience, and I would not recommend doing business with him or his associates in any capacity.
