We signed a contract with North By Northwest for about $25,000 for carpentry, electrical, plumbing and painting services involving our master bath remodel. All was going fine until this general contractor, Guy Lamar DuBose, engaged in belligerent and abusive behavior with our bathroom tile contractor.
Communications between these two broke down completely, and we wound up with a gong show wiring job for our heated tile flooring install. Mr. DuBose's electrical subcontractors barely speak English and between him and the 3 Spanish speaking electricians he hired to do our work, they managed to improperly wire the floor: they installed a 120 volt line that clearly should have been 240 volts; apparently Mr. DuBose did not inspect his subcontractors' work or pay attention to the voltage requirements for the Schulter system; this error was especially careless since NBNCI had worked with our tile contractor on several bath projects before ours,and this error was not noticed until we hired an independent electrician to trouble shoot the floor heating install. We wound up paying $500 to this new electrician to learn of this error. We paid Mr. DuBose in a timely manner for each phase of the work. However, the work ran way past the Sept. deadline.
OTHER ISSUES
1. He accepted payment of $500 in Sept. 2021 for a window replacement that was outside of our contract but has yet to turn up to install this window.
2. As part of our contract, he was supposed to install two very large and heavy mirrors in the bathroom, one weighed about 100 lbs. However, when he turned up to do this work, he had no helper [he had planned to use his plumber] and thus wanted my husband to assist. We said "no" and we paid a local neighborhood car mechanic to lift these mirrors so we could culminate this project. At this point Mr. DuBose was clearly irritated by my objecting to the type of glue he had proposed to use on the back of the mirrors; the instructions printed on his adhesive tube clearly stated: "DO NOT USE ON MIRRORS." Having consulted a builder, I learned of a product called "J Channel" specifically designed to support heavy mirrors, and I ordered the lengths needed. MR. DuBose claimed he had never heard of this product.
Finally, there is Mr. DuBose's refusal to complete the Punch List for the carpentry work he did. Although his contract had plenty of language about the great quality of workmanship he would provide, he left our high cedar ceiling installed with a number of nail heads clearly visible. We asked him at least 4 times to fix these, and he kept saying he would bring some "putty" by so WE COULD CLIMB UP A LADDER AND CAMOUFLAGE THESE FLAWS OURSELVES!
The other item he has failed to complete is the re-installation of the master bath's French doors. His first attempt to rehang them was terrible, and yet he left them in that state until we complained. He then made some adjustments, and promised to do additional work. He has not made any further adjustments.
