Steve Roubidoux
Owner
I was referred to Steve Roubidoux Construction through another contractor that had the up most faith and respect for Steve Roubidoux Construction. I met with Steve and talked a long time about what was needed and other "problem contractors" I have delt with in the past. He assured me he was reliable and wouldn't screw us around. The house he was working on me and my family had not been living in. So, his work was unsupervised. My bad, I figured if I was paying someone to do a job I shouldn't have to babysit. The things we had him do is as follows:
1. Place can lights in the kitchen--I didn't know where to exactly place them, so I told him to use his better judgement. I gave him my blueprints to where the new cabinets, appliances, bar and pantry were going to be so he could place them accordingly. He was fine with going off of blueprints because he builds homes and remodels for a living. After the job was finished the can lights were awful! One was out in the midde of nowhere, then there were a cluster of 3, then the next 4 went from being close to farther and farther apart. There was no uniformity what so ever! He did come back and fix to my liking because he felt bad that they looked so bad.
2. Move plumbing and remove a waterline in bathroom--He did move the plumbling and remove the waterline but the drywall mudding was half assed. He didn't sand or smooth out his work. He slopped mud on the wall, barely covered the holes and left huge indentions in the wall from not smoothing out the mud. I didn't ask him to fix this, I just patched it myself. Although I did pay him to do the job correct the first time.
3. Convert my single pantry in the kitchen into a double pantry--What he did was move an unexpected water line and give me a double closet. He didn't mud the seams, he put in an electrical box in the ceiling for what reason I don't know and left hot wires hanging out of the box, and didn't put shelves in. I addressed this issue with him when he came back to fix the problem and he said he would put a cap over the box with wire, which he didn't and he would put 3 shelves in the pantry. After the second time he was there to fix issues I called him to see when he was going to come finish the pantry and his response was "I have wasted enough time and money on your house. I will not be back to finish the pantry." So now I have a nice closet that my mom and I finished caulking the corners and painting. I guess when my fiance' has time and I have the extra money I will buy shelves to finish the pantry.
4. Patch a hole in the wall where a phone used to be--Once again he did patch the hole but didn't sand and make it smooth. Definitely not "quality" work.
5. Move plumbing for my kitchen sink--he moved the plumbing but the wall that it is on is open to the outside. He didn't seal this off from the outside. So when it's hot the heat will come in and vise versa in the winter with the cold. Not to mention bugs and spiders coming in. We are in the process of filling it in with expansion foam to seal it off, very easy for us to finish but I paid for a job to be completed and it wasn't.
6. Place a half wall for a bar area--He did do this but once my cabinets came in and the installer was placing them, he came into a problem. The wall that Steve built was warped. The studs he used was warped. When he came back over to the house to go over things that we were not happy with and we mentioned the wall, him and his worker both leaned on te wall to try and move it a little into place to make it work. He said it would be alot of work and would prefer not to have to redo it. My fiance said fine, him and the cabinet installer would make the cabinets and countertop work somehow. So, again, I paid for something that was not "quality".
7. Electrical for lights under my cabinets--I explained to Steve the lights that I wanted and he said he knew what I was talking about. When me and my fiance' looked at the finished product I had 5 areas with wires hanging out of my wall for the lights. My fiance' is not an electrician, he has his own Lawncare/Landscape/Snow Removal business and was very upset at what he seen. When we addressed Steve with this, Mike, my fiance', had to explain what lights I wanted. Steve agreed he should have known I needed only 1 box for the lights. So, he fixed his mess up and actually did a decent job at mudding the holes.
8. Run my 220 for my oven up to the new spot--WOW! I didn't even notice this wasn't finished until me and Mike were unloading the new cabinets in the garaage that is under the house. Mike asked me who the hell tore the ceiling out of the garage. I said it had to be Steve, he was supposed to run the 220 up for us. So, he finished the job (to his standards) and left my ceiling in my garage, including the air return duct work tore apart. I confronted him with this issue and he said he forgot to finish that. He came over and barely taped and mudded. I'm surprised the drywall hasn't fallen out of the ceiling.
9. He removed 2 windows and replaced drywall--When he replaced the drywall on the wall with the windows that were removed it looks like someone chewed it apart. It doesn't fit flush or even come down to the floor. It is left unfinished and open for bugs. Not sure what to do about this one!
10. Using drop cloths and cleaning up after the job is finished--I had just had brand new hardwood floors put in the dining room and ceramic tile put in the kitchen about 2 weeks before Steve started this job. He knew this because he had to wait until my floor guy was finished to start his job. Steve never put a drop cloth over my brand new floors nor did he make any effort to clean up after he was finished. My mom and I have been down on our hands and knees vacuuming up dust and trying to get the drywall mud that was slopped all over my floor out of the grout and off the tile. There had to be 1" of drywall dust covering my floors. My hardwood still had dust between the cracks I haven't been able to remove and my ceramic tile is a nice "milky" color now. Mind you I have black grout that is a nice shade of gray and my tile is black and brown that looks 20 years old. I have been told that I might be able to steam clean this out, but once again I expected "quality" and someone in my home that I hired to do work to "respect" my home.
12. Installing new front doors--He did do this but in the process somehow put a gouge in my new hardwood flooring. This can be covered up with a dark brown marker but still a new floor is damaged!
I contacted Steve again to see when he was going to finish the pantry and clean up the floors this time, since last time I had to do it, and he let me know he had wasted enough time and money on my house and he wouldn't he back. He doesn't know what to tell me.
My fiance' owns his own business and I take care of his clerical duties and phone calls. I don't know how many times Mike has had to "right a wrong". You never leave a job unfinished or half assed, and when you get that call, no matter how small it might be, or they can fix the problem their self, you drop what your doing and fix your screw up! It's not the customers fault the job was not completed correctly and you have to come back and fix it. That's Steve's fault. He should have treated our house with respect, gave us quality work that he was paid for and when we weren't happy with his finished product, there shouldn't have been any arguement from him to make us happy!
