We hired SAS City Wide to install pavers in our backyard. We thought they knew what they where doing and sadly found out they screwed up the project because they were lazy and basically ripped us off.
Rather than following the manufacturers instructions they did it their way, and the wrong way. To install the pavers, you need to remove about 9 inches of soil, then lay down landscape fabric to prevent weeds to come through. After removing the dirt, you are supposed to refill the dirt and about 5 inches of crushed stone, dirt and then a layer of sand which the pavers are supposed to lay on. (I only found out this was the way to do it after this disaster) It sounds like a lot of work right? It is! And that is what we paid them for, and it was not cheap!
Rather than do it the RIGHT WAY, they pulled up the grass and poured concrete over the ENTIRE backyard. Then they put some sand on top of the concrete and laid the pavers on top. They did this because it was the EASY WAY. They wouldn't have to do the hard work. They were probably thinking 'Let's just put concrete down, throw the pavers on top, they'll never now'.
We were naive and didn't do our homework. We didn't even realize this was not the way it was supposed to be done until we had a rain storm and our yard became a small pond. The pavers were NOT LEVEL or pitched properly. Every time it rains we have a puddle. The yard dips in the center where all the water collects.
We contacted SAS and they said they would come over and look at it. They never showed up. I called numerous times. Finally I called from a number they wouldn't recognize and they picked up. The guy tells me he had a death in his family and he went back home for the funeral. Not saying this isn't true, but we had been trying to contact him for FIVE MONTHS. So he tells us he is now back on schedule and will come over and take a look. NEVER SHOWED UP. Finally, we called in someone else to fix the water problem. They took a look and said that the pavers were installed wrong and that the concrete is not supposed to be under the pavers and to fix it they would have to drill down a few feet and install a drain, but could not guarantee this would solve the problem.
In addition the pavers were guaranteed not to lose their color. After a few months they started to fade and look dirty. When I called the paver company and told them what was happening, they asked how were the pavers installed. When I told him there was a laver of concrete under the pavers he said that was the reason why the pavers were fading because they weren't able to breathe because of the concrete.
Now we are stuck after $8000 with pavers that are dirty looking and creates a lake when we get a hard rain. Not only did these guys screw up, but they did not take responsibility for what they did. They basically disappeared.
So if you want to get a half...... job, hire these guys. If you want a professional, do your homework, get referrals and make sure they are licensed. Live and learn the hard way.
