VJ did a nice job on the bulk of the renovation of my UWS one bedroom, even though it took him a full YEAR longer than promised for him to complete the job.
But over the course of the project his team (who are very nice) broke a few things in my home and VJ promised me he'd see to it that all the damage is fixed at no extra charge. Plus he promised to complete several touch ups. Based on his word, I made the fatal mistake of paying him in full
Well, it took a full year of hounding to get him to fix SOME of the damage his team caused. No touchups were done at all. Intermittently, VJ would simply stop replying to my emails, texts, and calls and just ignore me. I have four unanswered texts to him each month for 6 and 7 month stretches of time as well as a similar number of unanswered calls and unreturned voice messages and emails.
Luckily, the super in my building -- who recommended VJ in the first place -- is from the same part of the world as VJ and was sometimes able to convince him to respond -- at which point he'd offer a ton of excuses as to why he'd been ignoring me (deaths in the family, sicknesses in the family, long family vacations, holidays, etc.).
Other times he’d fix one item on the punch list just to earn enough good will that I'd agree to have potential new clients come by and see the work he'd done.
But when it came to fixing the final item, a busted door on a $3,000 piece of vintage furniture (inside of which are important documents I can't access) he has not made good. First he offered several excuses as to why he couldn't fix it. Then when I offered several options as solutions, he simply said "ok" and then promptly went silent again.
It's now been TWO YEARS since the end of the construction and TWO AND A HALF YEARS since he first promised me he'd fix the busted door.
I finally texted and emailed that I'd lost patience and will be posting my story online and taking him to small claims court if he does not respond by the end of the day today.
Well, here we are.
Beware of this guy. It's a MAJOR headache to get him to deliver on anything. And once you pay him in full, you basically have to grovel to MAYBE get him to make good on his word.
Before hiring him, I went to see his work at another client's apartment and they mentioned that he's bad with doing the final touches. For instance, they showed me that he'd failed to put in the glass shower door even though they'd been asking him to for months.
When I asked VJ about this he laughed and said it was because the client won't decide which shower door they want, so how can he install it?
Now I see I should have really paid attention to that note from the other client.
